DFC at ANH Academy Week 2019
The Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Academy will host their annual ANH Academy Week in Hyderabad, India from June 24-28. The event is designed for both researchers and users of research to “foster knowledge exchange, innovation and learning around ANH research.” A series of pre-conference Learning Labs will take place June 24-25 and the research conference will take place June 26-28.
Several members of the Drivers of Food Choice Competitive Grants Program (DFC) will be in attendance. Grantees who will be giving oral presentations based on their DFC research include:
- Amos Laar from the University of Ghana, co-investigator with Michelle Holdsworth from the University of Sheffield, will present learnings from their team’s research on food environment policies for the prevention of nutrition-related non-communicable diseases in Ghana.
- Amy Ickowitz from the Center for International Forestry Research will present results from her project on the impact of agrarian transitions on diets in rural Indonesia.
- Helen Walls of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine will present results from her project on the effects of Malawi’s Farm Input Subsidy Programme on dietary diversity.
- Mirriam Matita of LSHTM, a co-investigator with Helen Walls, will present results from her project on the effects of legume seed provision on dietary diversity in Malawi.
- Solveig Cunningham of Emory University will present results from a novel methodology used in her study on drivers of food choice and the dual burden of malnutrition in a globalizing district in Southern India.
Grantees who will be giving poster presentations of DFC research include:
- Kate Wellard of the Natural Resource Institute will present results from her study on the relationships between nutrition and women’s empowerment in agriculture in Uganda.
- Paula Dominguez-Salas of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine will present results from her study on drivers of demand for animal-source foods in low-income informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Solveig Cunningham of Emory University will present results from her study on the Public Distribution System as a driver of food choice in Southern India.
- Valerie Flax of the Research Triangle Institute will present results from her study on body size perceptions and food choice among normal and overweight mothers and children in Malawi.
The DFC team will also host a Learning Lab on Tuesday, June 25th. The Learning Lab will use DFC project case studies to engage participants in the science of food choice research is used to identify leverage points from which programmatic and policy actions can be derived.
